Understanding Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia occurs when the body lacks sufficient vitamin B12 or folate, leading to the production of abnormally large red blood cells that cannot function properly. This deficiency can cause a range of symptoms and health issues.
Symptoms of Vitamin B12 or Folate Deficiency
- Extreme tiredness
- Lack of energy
- Pins and needles (tingling sensation)
- Sore and red tongue
- Mouth ulcers
- Muscle weakness
- Disturbed vision
- Memory, understanding, and judgment problems
- Psychological issues, including depression and confusion
Causes of Vitamin B12 or Folate Deficiency
Identifying the underlying causes of the deficiency is important. Common causes include:
- Autoimmune pernicious anaemia
- Dietary limitations, such as vegetarian or vegan diets
- Medical conditions that affect absorption, such as celiac and Crohn’s disease
- Certain medications
What is a Vitamin B12 Injection?
Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that supports healthy nerve cells and DNA production. Since our bodies do not produce vitamin B12, it must be obtained from food sources. A B12 injection (commonly known by its brand name, Neo-Cytamen) is an effective treatment for deficiency, ensuring the body receives the necessary amount of this vital nutrient.
